Abstract The paper,according to investigation of the developed course of Northwest cities from the Zhou dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty,makes a brief probing on the formation,the developing course and the underlying mechanism by means of cultural geography and historical geography.
The cities in Northwest China began to form in Zhou dynasty,and had a high development in Han and Tang dynasty. But they had a gradual declination from the mid-Tang dynasty. This paper thinks that the Northwest cities have three kinds of formations,four kinds of developing courses and endings,with an understanding of the influential factors including cultural factor,social-economic and natural factor. So it is very instructive and beneficial to make a thorough research on the courses and reasons of the cities formation,development and declination and to reveal the generating system and changing principles.
